Quick Skin Care

Select your type of skin from the following list and devote every day just five minutes to make your skin healthy and glowing

Normal Skin

It is smooth textured with no visible pores.
It shows no signs of dryness in youth.
It has an even tone that is not too pale, sallow or red.
It will tend towards dryness with age and as a result of external influence.

Morning

Cleanse using a wipe-off or wash-off cleanser for normal-to-dry skin.
Tone using alcohol-free toner one a water-moistened cotton ball.
Hydrate with a moisturizer for normal skin. Evening · Remove your eye make-up first, then cleanse, as above, but more thoroughly.
Apply moisturizer or a lightweight night lotion.

Dry Skin

It has a fine, matter texture.
It may be on the sensitive side.
There are usually no open pores.
It is more prone to fine lines and wrinkles than other skin types.
It is more vulnerable to the effects of central heating and sunlight.
Very fair skin is often dry

5-minute Skin-Care Morning

Oily Skin

It has open pores.
It will shine an hour or so after washing.
It may look oily on waking.
It has a tendency to spots and blackheads.
It is less susceptible to wrinkles than other skin types. 5-minute skin- care

Morning

Cleanse quickly, using a wipe-off cleanser for normal-to-oily skin or a soap-free cleansing bar. Rinse very thoroughly .
Tone using a toner that should be diluted if it contains alcohol so that it is not too drying. Moisten your cotton wool with water.
Moisturize where needed, using an oil-free or gel moisturizer.

Evening

Remove eye make-up, then cleanse as above, but more thoroughly.
Apply moisturizer just where needed.

Sensitive Skin

Looks fragile and translucent.
It is generally dry.
It may have freckles.
It tends to become flushed, blotchy and irritated in extremes of temperature or through using harsh cleansing products.
It may suffer from broken red veins, dermatitis, and allergies.

5-minute skin-care

Follow the program for dry skin.

Special tips

Look for hypoallergenic products that are scent-free.
Before trying a new product do a patch test. Rub a good amount on to your shoulder and leave it one overnight. If there is no sign of irritation, apply some to your neck and wait again. If there is no reaction, then the product will probably be safe to use on your face.

Common Beauty Myths
Beauty myths are often no more than old adages that are handed down to each generation. Some of these misconceptions are centuries old and just plain silly. While logic doesn't seem to play a big factor in beauty myths, they're still abundant. These common beauty myths are pure fiction and deserve to take their place in the "beauty myth hall of shame."

Soap is bad for your skin.
Older formulas contained animal fats and vegetable oils. Newer soaps are formulated to be milder and some contain moisturizers that don't dry out your skin. Clean skin is better than dirty skin.

Antiperspirants can cause cancer.
This theory makes it's rounds on the internet and you may find this in your inbox. There is no evidence linking antiperspirants and breast cancer.

Shaving your legs will make your hair grow in thicker.
You have as many hairs as is genetically determined, regardless of whether you shave them.

Drinking a lot of water leads to beautiful skin.
While drinking water is necessary for our bodies, too much will only result in bloating and too many trips to the bathroom.

Split ends can be repaired.
The only way to rid of split ends is to cut them off and prevent them in the future with good hair care.

Dry skin causes wrinkles.
Not true. Most wrinkles are caused from the sun.

You can wash acne and pimples away.
Scrubbing too vigorously will increase oil production and only aggravate the condition.

The sun clears up blemishes.
While the sun will temporarily dry out pimples, it interferes with healthy skin cells. This can cause a worse breakout a couple days after sun exposure.

Stick to one brand and line of products.
This beauty myth was probably put out by cosmetic manufacturers who want to keep customers loyal to their brand.

You don't need to use sunscreen on a cloudy day.
The sun's UV rays penetrate clouds and can still damage your skin.

Natural ingredients are non-allergenic.
Whether it's a natural or chemical ingredient, if your allergic to it, you'll see a reaction.

Chocolate and greasy foods cause acne.
No one food has been proven to cause breakouts. If you find a correlation, quit eating that particular food.

You can shrink the pores on your face.
Your pore size is genetically determined. Pores may appear larger by bacteria and dead skin cells. Retin-A and alpa hydroxys are designed to break up these materials and bring the pores back to their original appearance-

Causes of Dry Skin

You can't cure dry skin if you don't know what's causing it.

The wonders of winter:

And you thought the winter months meant cozy fires and homemade soup. Unfortunately, the winter months mean dry skin for a lot of people. One reason is because the air is colder and drier (not conducive to moisturizing your skin). The other reason is that you spend more times indoors, where it's warmer, but drier.

Your inheritance: You may have inherited mom's personality and dad's good looks, but you also got their dry skin.

You want fries with that?: A poor diet means more than just a big belly. If you're lacking in vitamins A and B, you might be lucky enough to get dry skin.

The elements: The sun (fire), wind, water and earth all contribute to dry skin. Yes, even water. All those showers remove the natural oils coating your body.

Medical complications: Skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema (dermatitis) will also dry out your skin.

Caring for Your Dry Skin

Long hot showers are one of the major causes of dry skin. You may feel clean and refreshed, but in a matter of minutes, your skin will look chapped and parched. The easiest solution to this problem is to not take as many showers. Unless you swim in mud for a living, you don't need five showers a day. But if you must shower after every meal, then cut down on the duration of each shower. Long showers wash off more of your natural oils. And instead of hot water (which will soften up the oils and make it easier to wash away), use warm water—it's better for your skin, not to mention your scalp and hair.

While you're showering, try not to use soap. Soap irritates and dries the skin. If you just can't shower without soap, use a mild bar soap. Liquid soap, shower gels, glycerin soap and deodorant soap are all very harsh to your skin. And try to use the soap only on parts of the body that really need it: your face, armpits, genitals, and feet.

Once you're done showering (seems like everything you were doing in the shower was bad for your skin, huh?), pat dry with a towel. Rubbing dry will further irritate the skin. Leave yourself a bit damp. Immediately after, moisturize your skin with bath oil or moisturizing lotion.

Of course there are other ways to moisturize your skin.

Drink plenty of fluids. Dehydration will not help your skin look its very best.
During the winter months, the air is drier—indoors and out. Use a mist vaporizer or humidifier to add moisture to the air in your home.
Wash with your hands instead of a washcloth or loofah.

The general rule of thumb when using moisturizers is "the oilier, the better." Oil-based moisturizers work better than water-based moisturizers because they won't evaporate and can trap the water better. Furthermore, water-based moisturizers contain alcohol and may dry the skin when used repeatedly
